about

"Nothing Valued is Here" are among the first words a future traveler might see upon intruding into the area protected by the WIPP nuclear semiotics project. This is a piece of cultural trivia that has been both fascinating and terrifying to me for a while, and the eventual shape of this album is mostly a result of me thinking about why, and how.

Desert of Thorns is the opening track, a reference to the "landscape of thorns" and "threatening earthworks" designed to discourage casual passersby from coming near - or, worse, digging into - the buried cache of dangerous radionuclies that the WIPP is tasked with protecting. It is meant to convey the vague and building sense of unease one might feel upon walking through a landscape designed specifically to be uncomfortable and unpleasant, littered with warning signs and copies of The Scream.

Alpha Rain takes a look at the horrors hidden beneath, and their origin; the most representational piece on the record, this track sums up what I imagine it might feel like if one could stand at the heart of a critical reactor, from startup to shutdown.

The Blue Forest examines another potential method of deterrence, a forest of trees which are all growing blue, rather than green. It is a natural, peaceful place, but something is not quite right.

(Bonus track "The Aviary" included with album purchase.)

Created entirely using my Eurorack modular synthesizer and open source software. Thanks to Stargirl, Émilie Gillet, Rekka and Devine of Hundred Rabbits, and everyone else who makes modular a great way to make music.
